Breaking down Lowlands

Our crewmember Liam, and a Belgian colleague of The PowerShopI believe Lowlands is the biggest festival of the Netherlands. And there was mud everywhere. I'm really fond of my gear, though. My shoes are REALLY waterproof :-)
We had to clean up all the electricity wires on the festival field. I was working for the Belgian branch of The PowerShop, a professional organization delivering electricity to the Rock&Roll business.
This was my first assignment as a stagehand after the summer break. Let's hope there's more to come.

We called it Camp DirtWe called it Camp Dirt
This was our base camp, where all the wires had to go back to. At that time, it wasn't raining anymore... :-)

Gig season starting again

After my vacation in Barcelona on July 30, I immediately had to play in Haaksbergen with Come Again, the biggest accoustic duo of the Netherlands. It consists of 3 people. What's worse, we even had a fourth guest member playing the accordeon.
I was still in the BCN vibe, so I took my small derbouka with me. I wanted to jam, all night long! Of course that didn't happen. Dutch people are not as easy with music as Barcelonese citizens...

Two weeks later I had a wedding gig in a beautiful castle. The weather was that good, that everybody was sitting outside in the giant garden. More like a park, really. So we started to play outside, breaking string after string. Must have something to do with trying to play louder, or something.
When the bride and groom were gone, we played some more songs outside for a selected group of desperate partypeople. Me included... We could have stopped but the atmosphere was too good. One of the waiters wanted to hear Alabama Song again, so we made sure he heard that too. Somehow I have the feeling that we are one of the last bands on earth that play with their hearts instead of their wallets only.

Meindert Talma preparing for his gigThe day before yesterday me and Carmenkata played with Robin Block again. It was our second gig with the aspiring poet, and it went really well. We played on a poetry festival in Groningen, called Uit Het Totaal. The lineup of the festival was really good. Dichters uit Epibreren and Meindert Talma delivered great performances as well. When I used to organize a monthly Full Moon festival in Atak together with Gert Gering, I programmed both Meindert Talma and Epibreren as well. And that was 9 years ago, when especially Meindert Talma was a nobody :-) I'm a very big fan of Meindert.

My car Banana in a tight spotYesterday I had a covers gig again, with Come Again. This time we were playing for some heavily Reformed Christians. That meant that we were not allowed to play some songs with alleged blasphemic content. Of course they were only interested in the Dutch blasphemies, because these kind of people don't speak any other language than Dutch. So 'Losing my religion' was no problem... ;-)
It's hard, though. Even the young people in the audience didn't get it. They kept on asking for songs like 'Verdomd Alleen' (Damned Alone, in english). And I was asking our guitarist through the mike if he could play 'Stairway to Heaven'. Oops...
When we went back to our cars after the show, it turned out I forgot to turn off the lights of Banana, my car. There was no life left in her. We tried to run her downhill, but that didn't work :-( In the end we had to load up her battery, and that worked. Phew... I was really sweating there. I mean, we were in the middle of nowhere...

We normally have some fun backstage. This time it was like a children's dream: they had stageprops everywhere!

Lawn signing record deal for Germany, Austria and Italy

My friends of Lawn are a strange lot. They keep on growing in fame. I know them for about 10 years now, and they started ever so humble. But look at them now! They've signed a deal with Supermodern, a German record label. Their latest record 'Backspace' will be distributed in various countries, including Germany, Austria and Italy.
Job, one of the singers and composers of the band, called me last week to tell me the good news. And he wanted to know what we should do about the vinyl version of their record. Because I'm bringing out the vinyl of 'Backspace' through my label [drga-drga]. Well, we have enough for the German market as well. And if Supermodern wants more than were produced, we can order a second run. Much cheaper that way! I think we finally have a financially sound product in our hands :-)
This is also good news for Carmenkata, who is singing a few words on the title track of 'Backspace'!

I got some nice pics of the Lawn show I organized a few months ago in Metropool. I hope to post these tomorrow. Music77 and Audiotransparent fans will also be pleased, because they were on the same bill and I got some pics of them too.

Bearsuit, Magoo and Fiel Garvie package deal

Da Garv rehearsing in Anne's houseThe three Norwich bands Bearsuit, Magoo and Fiel Garvie will play in October in Holland. They'll do two gigs, unless anyone can get Bearsuit to play some more. First, they'll play on October 12 in Paradiso. The day after they'll play in Ekko. It took some convincing to get Bearsuit to play the second gig, because they were keen on getting back to their dayjobs again. Which involves something with a university library. Pity...

First time mixing live music

Last weekend I got my first experiences mixing live music. Most of the stuff was fairly easy, consisting of Shanty choirs. Don't worry, I didn't know what they were either. Some of them were good, some of them really bad. But it's easy work. And the weather was too good to complain, since I was outside all day...
The repertoire was rather limited. How many times did I hear the shanty of the liquor vessel that went down? 5 times? But after the first day of shanty choirs, I had the opportunity to mix a very good blues band. They brought a Lesley cabinet with them. Boy, that band sounded good.
Anyways, this weekend gave me a lot of confidence in my live mixing skills. I don't feel comfortable yet, but at least I know I can pull it off.

Barcelona is the best

Just came back from a marvelous trip to Barcelona. Amazing how you can get the city under your skin in just a few days. I will live in Barcelona one day, I swear. I'm already making arrangements with a few friends. My plan is to have an apartment with some friends in BCN by 2005.
I did a lot of drinking, learning Spanish and playing flamengo. I also met some people from London who might get me some gigs for Carmenkata there.
